What IsModel Context Protocol (MCP)?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI applications connect to external tools and data sources through a common interface, instead of a custom integration for each one.

MCP was introduced by Anthropic in 2024 and is now supported by many AI applications and tools. An "MCP server" exposes a tool's data and actions; an AI application acting as an "MCP client" can then use them with the user's permission.

For firms, MCP matters because it widens what an AI workspace can work with: a practice-management or document system that offers an MCP server can be connected without waiting for a bespoke integration.
